What is a custom web site? I would say that is one designed with your business fully in mind. And 'the usual process of optimization, but not just for search engines, not only for your visitors. I would say, though, that if you plan to hire a web designer to create a custom site, you should avoid and ignore the pattern term. There are many places to get layout templates online, and many of them are cheap, free or included with other services like web hosting. Of course, if you favor the ease of novelty, you should take advantage of these low cost options.

However, if you want a custom web site then you should take advantage of the skills and experience instead of professional web designers. Of course, not fast, not as cheap. There are advantages and obstacles at all, and customization are against additional cost in money, time, or (more likely) both. But the benefits are having a site created with your specific business in mind. Graphics and links, texts and programs, all designed specifically to communicate the essence of your product, service or idea. Anyone can establish an online presence.
