INTRODUCTION:

The rupture of esophageal varices is the most feared complication of portal hypertension, one of the leading causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, with a high mortality rate, despite the scientific - technical reached.

Almost all the authors agree that endoscopic treatment is the choice to be the cheaper and with less complications, endoscopic ligation of esophageal varices with elastic bands, the favorite to eradicate them for being easy to use and a low rate of adverse events.

In order to show the effectiveness of variceal ligation in the eradication of the same in patients with portal hypertension, is that we decided to carry out this work.

OBJECTIVES:

General:

Evaluate the effectiveness of rubber band ligation in the eradication of esophageal varices in patients with high post.

Specific:

• Characterize the patients studied biological variables as age and sex. • Determine the number of sessions needed to eradicate varices. • Evaluate the presence of complications attributable to proceed.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

• We performed a prospective study with 30 patients (8 men and 22 women) who had esophageal varices grade III-IV of the packet classification, which had no active bleeding from the digestive tract and stable conditions that allow the patient's cooperation .

• Used an Olympus Evis Lucera video endoscopy 260 SL, a multi-band ligation rubber MBL-6 type and design of a charger is conical rubber bands.

• In the first video endoscopy was decided if necessary the realization of the ligature.

• Patients were quoted at 15 days for evaluation and endoscopic ligation new session if necessary.

• With the tie set mounted on the end of the endoscope, and by aspiration of varicose veins, we proceed to tie them with rubber bands.

• The results are presented in tables and statistical graphs for which the package uses Microsoft Word for Windows.

Distribution of patients by sex

Distribution of patients by sex and age groups

Distribution of patients according to the classification of Paquet

Number of sessions per patient

The varices were eradicated in all patients.

No complications resulting from the application of this approach.

CONCLUSIONS

• The ligation of esophageal varices with rubber bands is effective in eradicating the same in patients with portal hypertension.

• Female sex was the most represented in this series.

• Only 3 sessions of ligation on average it took to eradicate varices in our patients.

• There were no complications from this procedure.
